hey kids -- mostly, welcome to the 5th of july. i missed you all with my paean on 7/4.

POEM ON THE 4th, 2011

on the 4th of july
if you can get outside
in the city or somewhere
good and big

go sit quiet on your steps
and wait for the inbound
whistle and flash in the sky,
you can feel it, good

in your stomach and in
your chest, starting up a
faster beat in your heart
and remember,

we blew up all the diamonds
and all the bison. and all the
good old bones and dust,
are still livin' -- in

your mighty american gut

Just wanted to chime in, because that was my first Grateful Dead concert. I was thinking about that day 25 years ago and how I knew right there and then, this is what it's all about. Of course, maybe not the greatest show, but I took a chance, rolled the dice, played my hand and never looked back. Not really the beginning of my love for their music and July 95 certainly was not the end of it either. Listened to a sample of Charlie Miller's new digitals for 7/8 and 7/9, 1995 and will be giving them a heartfelt listen when I get a chance. Charlie Miller also gave us a copy of the soundboard for 7/4/86, which I prefer to the Audience because the audience copy has some noise or quality like someone was tapping on the mic stand or the chair next to the microphone along to the drums of Mickey and Billy. I could be wrong, maybe it was the actual drums being picked up a little too overdriven by the mics. What do I know, maybe it's not even this copy of the audience I had a problem with, my old cassette I got a hold of suffered with the problem too. But I do prefer this SDB. There is also a video out on the internet for this show, good quality, and the show was filmed because part of it was broadcast on Farm Aid TV via satelite around the nation. I had a Happy 4th, but I live overseas. I started a new job yesterday, but over here it was just a Monday to everyone else. I made the most of it and so far enjoying the job.
